A civil society group, Integrity Group of Osun, has criticized Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) Lateef Fagbemi for overstepping his authority regarding the ongoing local government crisis in Osun State.
The group in a statement signed by its Convener, Comrade Omole Olusegun, assert that the AGF cannot assume judicial powers or halt elections, emphasizing that only a court can interpret its own rulings and stop an election.
The group expressed shock at Fagbemi’s involvement, noting his previous role as a lawyer for former Governor Gboyega Oyetola, which they argue presents a conflict of interest.
They insist that any disputes about court judgments should be resolved through the courts, not through the AGF’s statements.
Furthermore, they highlighted Fagbemi’s failure to acknowledge a judgment from the Action Peoples Party (APP) that invalidated APC council candidates, asserting that this omission reflects bias.
The Integrity Group urges the Osun state government to proceed with elections scheduled for February 22, 2025, describing the AGF’s warnings as politically motivated and lacking legal foundation.
