Group under the agies of Osun Youth Initiative for Good Governance (OYIGG) calls for the immediate impeachment of the Speaker of the Osun State House of Assembly, Honourable Olumide Wale Egbedun, following his death threat against the Alasi of Asi, Oba Oyewale Olasunkanmi Isaac (Akorede I).
In a strong statement signed by its National Convener, Dr. Akande Adeyemi, OYIGG urged the Inspector General of Police, IGP Kayode Egbetokun Mni, and the Director General of the Department of State Services to urgently arrest and investigate the Speaker, describing his actions as “rascality of the highest order.”
This call follows the emergence of a leaked audio recording that has caused widespread outrage across Osun State.
The recording, which surfaced on social media on Wednesday evening, captures the Speaker threatening the traditional ruler with imprisonment and possible death, citing alleged “political disloyalty.” Honourable Egbedun, who hails from the same community as the monarch, warned the king against opposing his political dominance in local affairs.
In the viral audio, the Speaker said in Yoruba:
“I will jail you, I swear. I’ll ensure you rot there. You think being a king gives you power over me? I’ll deal with you, and if you’re not careful, you won’t leave that place alive.”
These threats are deeply disturbing, especially given the ongoing tensions between Egbedun and Oba Isaac, and reflect a pattern of intimidation rather than governance.
The group pointed out that this is not the first instance where the Speaker has shown disrespect to traditional institutions.
Earlier this year, he reportedly snubbed the revered Aragbiji of Iragbiji at a public event, drawing sharp criticism from senior traditional rulers.
Moreover, OYIGG highlights Egbedun’s previous harassment of a senator’s aide in Ilesa, painting a picture of a leader repeatedly abusing his power and position.
Dr. Adeyemi emphasized: “No one is above the law. The Speaker of the Osun State House of Assembly must be held accountable. His threats are not only an attack on a traditional ruler but also a grave assault on our democracy.”
The statement also recalled another incident involving the Speaker’s disrespectful remarks toward the Aragbiji of Iragbiji, which were widely reported in February 2025.
The Speaker publicly disparaged the monarch, dismissing his concerns as “media theatrics” and reminding him that he “remains a subject of the governor,” further illustrating his disdain for traditional authority.
OYIGG warned that power is fleeting and calls on Honourable Egbedun to reconsider his actions before he jeopardizes both his political standing and the respect due to Osun’s cultural heritage.
