Senator Francis Adenigba Fadahunsi, representing Osun East Senatorial District, and Chairman Senate Committee on Industry, has called for support to establish Orthopedics hospital in Obokun, emphasizing its potential to bridge easy access and speedy professional care for the increasing Orthopedics needs of the people.
Fadahunsi, in a memorandum presented at the public hearing of the Senate Committee on health (Secoundary and Tertiary) on Thursday, in Abuja, noted that the establishment of this institution will safe lives of many in and outside the South-West geopolitical zone.
“The establishment of this institution is informed by the urgent need to create a more accessible means for Orthopedics needs of the people of Osun State and neighboring states, like Oyo, Ogun, Ekiti, Ondo and Kwara, covering about 30 million people who would have travel between 100 to 400 kilometres to Igbobi, Lagos for their orthopedic treatments.
According to him, the objectives of this hospital shall provide easy access and speedy professional care, encourage treatments, and correctional surgeries for accident victims.
“Encourage treatments and correctional surgeries for accident victims, particularly motorcycle and tricycle riders, including motor accidents, causing serious fractured legs, skulls, and other parts of the bodies.
The lawmaker noted that accident victims are usually patronising “quack doctors” and later get amputated when the quacks have no further solution to the injuries.
Fadahunsi said the hospital would reduce to barest minimum the excesses of untrained “Doctors” known as “Native bone Doctors.
“The hospital shall reduce the pressure on the only orthopedic hospital in the region, the National Orthopedics hospital Igbobi, which is over stretched from the demand of the 22 million Nigerians in Lagos.
It’s will be recalled that statistics has shown that in the last five years an average of 800 people from Osun State, 400 from Ekiti state, 700 from Ondo state and 900 from Oyo state visits the National Orthopedics hospital, Igbobi, Lagos, for orthopedic needs annually.
